‘Friends of Police should contribute positively to society’

In an effort to bring police and the public closer for free flow of information that would help detect crime, a three-day training programme for police personnel and Friends of Police (FoP) was inaugurated here on Tuesday.Conducted by ‘FOP Documentation and Multimedia Training Centre, Chennai, about 40 police personnel and 40 FoP were trained in the first sessions on various aspects like role and responsibilities of FOP, passing information to the police and prevent and detect crimes and suggesting ideas to solve local problems.Psychological training, personality enhance training and team building training were also given to them during the session.Speaking after inaugurating the programme, Superintendent of Police Ashwin M. Kotnis said that the structured interaction between police and public would help in effective information system as the inadequate police manpower at each station could be overcome by FoP. ‘Success of the community policing depends on individuals capacity at station level officers to build effective network as they act without any direction from higher officials,’ he added.Mr. Kotnis said that FoP system should not be misused and should contribute positively to society and added that a member of FOP recently had helped the police in detecting a major crime in Mettur.

The State currently has 4.5 lakh FOP with over 500 FOP in the district. Regular three-day training is given to FOP in each district every year with the State government providing Rs. 50,000 for each programme. ‘The mission is to connect people and police with themselves at their best’, said trainers from Chennai Sneha Fernandes and Sebastian Paulraj.
